This set is simply stunning and will not disappoint, not even the pickiest buyer. My photos are showing it quite well, however, depending on your screen settings, you may not be able to detect the soft creamy ivory background tone. These multi pink Victorian roses are not on white, the ground coloring is a definite cream ivory, and it might have a slight tint of green, it's hard to tell. It is very obvious that this hand painted artwork was applied by a talented artist, who understood how to use a brush. The roses are well accomplish, they are lifelike and the additional application of gold gilt leaves makes for a spectacular finished work of art. I see no paint loss or other problems with the artwork, it is gorgeous. I'm showing you plenty of photos so you can see all the fabulous details of this set.
These gold gilded leaves are a rather heavy application. The veining in the leaves is raised and has collected a little dirt over the last 100+ years. I have removed nearly all of it. There is barely a tad bit remaining but in person, it is hardly visible, mush nicer than these close-up photos. The hair brush is a delight, with it's multi toned leaves. I will let my photo speak of it's eloquence and dynamic presence. Although the brush bristles are in very nice condition for their age, this brush is advertized for decorative use only, I doubt it would hold up to daily use. The metal rims and handles are made of German Silver, a nickel based metal blend. They have been layered in gold gilt and much of that still remains. I have properly, and gently, cleaned and polished the set for your enjoyment, being careful not to remove any of the gilding. The rims have a fancy edge and when you pass your hand around the outer perimeter of the rims, you will feel just very little minor denting, nothing naughty at all. The Art Nouveau open worked handles are wonderful and suffer no defects or flaws, they are strong and secure.
The reflective glass is an old mirror, with depth, from a time when mirrors were hand cut, beveled and polished. This mirror maintains a good clear image, having only early signs of aging, as shown and not many scratches either. This mirror will serve it's next owner for a long time, it has plenty of life and will remain with the set. The overall measurements are: 9 1/4 in length with a 5 inch diameter viewing surface, the brush is proportionately a little smaller. I can't find one reason why you would not love this antique Art Nouveau hand painted vanity mirror and brush set. This is one of the most excellent examples you will find. If roses are your preference, this vanity set is worthy of your utmost consideration. If you are wanting to make a life long impression, this heirloom quality set would make for a breathtaking gift.
