A little history: the Alvin Manufacturing Company, founded in 1886 by William H. Jamouneau in Irvington, New Jersey, moved to Sag Harbor, Long Island in 1895, changed its name to the Alvin Silver Co. in 1919. The Alvin Silver Manufacturing Company was known for making fine sterling silver flatware, hollow-ware and lavatory items. The Gorham company of Providence, Rhode Island acquired the Alvin Company’s dies and patterns in 1928. This set is striking and quite handsome indeed. The sterling silver is formed in a gently hammered fashion which affords these pieces a rather uniquely textured appearance. Although somewhat simplistic, this vanity set is both elegant in nature and rich in character. The hand mirror is a bit larger and has fair weight, yet it's not overly heavy. The four matching accessory brushes are lighter in weight. This is not a chintzy set, it is very well made and has withstood the test of time, maintaining both it's beauty and structural integrity.
The original beveled mirror is in splendid clear condition and reflects a fine image. The hand mirror is 10¾ in length, it has a nearly 6 inch diameter and a viewing surface of 5½ inches across. The glass face does have a couple of scratches which should be expected from a 100+ year old mirror. The four accessory brushes were minimally used to brush garments such as the coat, dress, pants and similar wardrobe items. All four brushes have all their full natural bristles that are in extra nice condition for their age. Each of the pieces is monogrammed in the center cartouche, as shown in the photos. The lettering has a bit of an Art Deco flair but not entirely so, I do believe this set is pre-Art Deco era.
The sterling silver on all 5 pieces is in gorgeous condition. It's hard to notice even one small scratch here and there, I truly don't find any issues to report concerning this set. I see no significant problems, only the scratch on the reflective face of the mirror, which seems easy to forgive. I have cleaned and polished this set to the best of my ability. It now shines and glows with an abundance of life. It is genuinely radiant, this set is stunning in every respect and has not been abused at all, in fact, I doubt it was ever handled very much. I'm showing you lots of photos which exhibit the true grandeur of this set and what you should expect, only it will look more fabulous in person.
The brush bristles might to be set into a wood base which appears to be coated with a solid layer of off-white shiny enamel paint, giving it the look of ivory. The brushes are all very securely set into the sterling and there seems to be no wearing of any of the elements, amazingly good condition for antique brushes. All of the pieces in this set have been properly marked with the Alvin sterling marking. The largest brush measures 7 inches long, 2 inches wide and the bristles are 1¼ inches. The pair of oval brushes are 4¾ by 3¼, with 1 inch bristles. The small elongated brush is 5½ in length, nearly 1½ wide and has 1⅜ inch bristles. Look at my photos closely and judge this set as the exciting treasure that it is. Please consider this early 1900 antique American made Alvin sterling silver 5 piece hand mirror and brush vanity set. When you see this ensemble in person, you will love it.
