Just a bit of history, born Marie Rose Josephine Tascher de la Pagerie, Josephine became a noted Parisian socialite after marrying Alexandre de Beauharnais. She survived both the execution of her husband and imprisonment during the French Revolution to marry Napoleon Bonaparte, a promising general whose rise soon made her Empress of France. She died, still popular with the public, in 1814. This famous portrait of her is transfer decorated on an antique porcelain back, gracing this vanity set with eloquence and grace. It is encircled with a deep cobalt blue border and further enhanced with hand painted gold gilt stenciling, fit for royalty. I am showing lots of photos so you can see for yourself how truly lovely this vanity set is. The condition of the artwork, as well as the porcelain, is in very good condition, with very little to mention. There are some reflections in the photos, please excuse them as they were unavoidable. There is some occasional porcelain crazing that is commonly found on antique porcelain, shown in the 3rd photo. On the hand mirror, there is one scratch to the left of her pink shawl, above the name Josephine, in the white background, visible in the 2nd photo. This hand mirror and brush set will arrive in very lovely condition, it is absolutely breathtaking. The brassy golden rims and Art Nouveau handles have been polished to an ultra clean sheen, almost looking gold gilded. I find no dents at all, they are sound and secure, hard to find them this good, quite impressive and very bright. They exemplify the Nouveau era beautifully and are a treat to look at. The brush has natural bristles, set in a wood base, and are in lovely condition, very full and all intact. The original beveled mirror was in total disarray so I replaced it with a quality clear mirror with a wide bevel at the edge, just like the original. The set measures standard, the mirror being 9¼ in length with a 5 inch viewing surface, the brush is smaller but proportionate. I know you'll agree, when you see this set, that it is a special treasure for your vanity and you will so enjoy using it each day.
