This set is completely hand painted, the artist was quite talented and did an excellent job, both with the portraits and the overall shadings. This set has an intricate mold design of raised Art Nouveau styled curvy detailing and the over layering of gold gilt is superbly hand applied. The blues are showing relatively good in my photos and there are slight differences in the shades of the blue from the hand mirror to the hair brush. Blue can be a tricky color to photograph, in person, the blues may be a tad bit more of a softer baby blue, but if so, not by much. I think my photos are fairly close, at least on my screen. I am quite enamored by this set, it truly has captured my heart and I know it will do the same for you or that very special lady in your life. The endearing qualities of this set are unique and incomparable. The portraits are very well executed. I'm not 100% positive but I think the portraits may be of the same lovely young lady, although each portrait does express a different look, one being a side profile and the other a full face. The hair is styled somewhat similarly, so that is why I am thinking it is the same sweet damsel. Her side profile shows her with bare shoulders, a double strand of pearls in her hair and she holds a bouquet of pinky peach roses. She obviously is somewhat shy and reserved, as she gazes downward. Each portrait is encircled with a wonderful and artistic gold gilt frame along with additional roses and greenery. You won't find much in the way of paint loss on these pieces, not even very much wear on the gold gilding. For the most part, the paint and gold gilt is really good, just a bit of gold wear, here and there on the high points but nothing very obvious or intrusive. For a set of this age, it's in fabulous condition and suffers no structural damages, cracks, chips, etc.....
This portrait, on the hair brush, continues to express her bashfulness, as she is still looking downwards. Her full facial features have a tender and caring expression. She appears to be dressed in a wispy flowing white dress and matching shawl. Whether these portraits are of the same woman really makes no difference, as they are both delightful illustrations and the artist was successful at capturing her very soft features. This set maintains it's original beveled mirror and it is beginning to show some aging in the form of overall early fogging and some speckling/wear to the outer bevel but when you bring the mirror up to your face, it's harder to see this because the mirror still offers a good reflection and is very usable. The mirror is set well into the porcelain but it has a wee bit of movement but no way will this mirror come out. The natural bristle hair brush is dense and thick, it appears to be all there and in amazing condition but because of it's age, I advertize it for decorative use only. The brush bristles are set into a wood base that I have to assume has been glued into the porcelain brush holder. It is solid and securely in place. This set measures as follows: the hand mirror is 8 inches at it's longest point with a beveled mirror set into a 5 inch diameter; the brush is 81/2 inches long by 31/4 inches wide and the brush bristles are ⅞ inch long. This isn't the sort of set that comes along but once in a lifetime, so if you are loving what you see, please consider ordering this antique Victorian, all porcelain, all hand painted, vanity mirror and brush set today, it's heirloom quality and cannot be replaced.
