Those of you who have followed my purses know that I don't buy very many needlepoints because the great ones just don't come along and I don't want to offer the ordinary. This needlepoint is all the collector could hope for with the addition of a central figural portrayal finished in petit point, a smaller stitch. The condition is impeccably preserved and looks like it has never been carried. This is a very clean purse, it did not require additional cleaning, it's previous owner took wonderful care of her collection. The needlework is likely a blend of silk and wool. The talent of this needle worker is quite evident. Her choice of design and colors are charming and show no color loss. Every stitch is in place, I have found none missing or snagged, no stains or wear or issues to mention. Based on it's stunning frame and it's characteristics, I would date this purse to the 1920' s - 1930's era. The colors are crisp and bright, all on a beige/ivory background that shows pretty well in the first 2 photos, it might even be a little deeper in ivory.
This purse has a stunning jeweled and enameled frame. I almost missed finding the mark and I needed a magnifier to read it but it is clearly stamped on the inside arm of the frame. Blue stones appear as Lapis and they have the look of semi-precious. The enameling is the perfect added touch, the brass metal is bright and shiny with just a bit of patina but basically looking new. There is very little in the way of enamel loss. There are little studded bezel set rhinestones around the frame as well. The fancy Victorian styled kissing clasp is also tipped in what looks like Lapis. All this is superbly set on the front side, all remaining sides and edges are fully and entirely embossed with lovely designs. This is a classy frame for a classy and elegant needlepoint evening purse, made in Austria during the 1920's to 1930's era. Please note that there is a slight opening where the front and back sides of the frame meet. This does not effect closing or opening but I mention it for accuracy. Sometimes when the frames were cast, the clasp were set in position and occasionally that position left a thin space. SI don't want to try to tweak the clasp, as I do not want to break this perfect purse. For me, it is not bothersome in the least. The side gusset adds a little depth to this purse and measures 1 1/4 inches. This is a fairly generously sized purse considering the era it comes from. Even though the frame is only 6 inches across the hinges, the interior feels to be quite roomy. Once you get your hand past the frame, it feels fabulous inside. The purse is well secured to the frame at all points. The lining is not quite as refined as some but it fits good and the fabric has a comfortable feel. Everything inside and out is extremely clean, no odors or perfume scents, seems to have not been carried. Stuffed with tissue this purse measures about 8 inches from top to bottom, 9 inches across at it's widest and 6 1/4 across the frame. The beautiful chain handle drops the purse by 7 1/2 inches. Thank you for considering adding this very special needlepoint and petit point Austrian purse to your treasury of fine vintage hand made purses.
