Antique Victorian Art Nouveau Petit Point Eye Glass Sleeve

<<<< Back to Personal and Wardrobe Accessories

This is an awesome antique Victorian petit point expandable eye glass sleeve, a purse and personal accessory that is not likely to come along very often.

Antique Victorian petit point eye glass sleeve case late 1800's Art Nouveau

Hand made during the late 1800's to 1900 era, this elegant and charming eye glass holder is one of the best of it's kind that I have ever acquired.

I'm showing you lots of photos since this extraordinary piece has a lot of character and detail. These first 2 pictures show the front side, first the fold over top and then the bottom portion. You can see that there are 2 different color schemes displayed on this piece. The top flap, along with the backside, has a softer color palette of dusty pink roses and paler Art Nouveau designs, as well as other color differences, while the bottom section of the front side had deeper burgundy roses and a darker crisper Nouveau motif. This is an intentional creative pattern and is not caused by fading of the stitches. Although this antique eye glass case has an overall aged patina and perhaps a few light discreet discolors, the tone and depth of the threads has not faded. The micro petit point is comprised of 36 stitches to the inch or nearly 1300 stitches to the square inch and has a very intricate and elaborate Victorian pattern.

These 2 pictures show the backside of this treasure, as well as the softer colors, the dusty pink roses and the complex pattern of hanging urns overflowing with flowers and garlands.  I really must say how wonderful it is that a Victorian petit point piece, such as this one, has maintained itself so well throughout the decades.  Eye glass cases were accessories that tended to be heavily used, so it's a treat and privilege to find one that is still very well kept. I acquired this from a private collection where the items had been stored away for many decades. I have professionally cleaned this eye glass holder for you, it is clean and refreshed and looks quite lovely for a piece of this age.

Another fabulous aspect of this case is that it is expandable and will carry your eye glasses. I have stuffed it with a bit of tissue paper and this is how this item should be kept and displayed when not in use. The photo of the top edge has 2 black arrows, one on each side, showing 2 small splits in the petit point, easier to notice on the left side of the photo, much harder to detect on the right. This was caused from creasing because it was not stuffed, for proper shaping, while in storage. It is actually the background gauze or mesh that the petit point is stitched onto that splits, the stitches themselves are intact, so for me to mend it, I need a background for it. I would have to take a few tiny stitches and tack the petit point down to the interior lining. I can do this easily but you might detect the stitches on the lining, so I will do it if requested. The last 2 photos show the differences in color tones. Overall, I would rate this late 1800's Victorian petit point eye glass holder as being in very, very good, condition. It measures, stuffed with tissue, approx. 6 inches from top to bottom, 2 inches from side to side and the gusset expands to 1 inches. This is a fascinating antiquity from the Victorian era and will make a great addition to any unique petit point collection.
