The Evans Company led the way in the making of these carryalls and they did a superior job with the design and structural elements of this example. The pearl on this purse is gorgeous with lots of depth and character, changing tones with the lighting as you walk around the room, all eyes will admire this one. The colors are intense with vibrant pinks, greens, blue and ivory, they even look better in person. The individual mother-of-pearl shell squares are skillfully arranged and cover most of the exterior surfaces, except for where the metal must prevail. I have tried to show most surfaces in my photos, so you can judge this carryall as worthy of owning. There is barely a flaw to be found, there is a tiny hairline, I think, on one of the outer side edges of the carryall but I keep having trouble finding it. I'm really not even sure if it's an actual hairline or if it's a natural flaw to the pearl, as this is real shell and will occasionally have it's natural imperfections. Again, overall, this purse is in splendid condition, showing wee signs of age.
This carryall is cased in a gold tone metal that is carried with a sturdy mesh strap. The metal is all bright and shining with a deep gold tone, no dents at all, it would be hard to find a mother-of-pearl carry-all in any better condition. The exterior metal has a ribbed design that runs around the entire perimeter of the purse. This carryall opens from both the front and back sides to reveal each of the two separate compartments. Therefore, each side has a clasp and each side has a hinge, all in extra fine, good working condition.
The interior, of course, is lovely with all of the original components and looks like it was never used. The lipstick has a cover that flips back to reveal the old red lipstick, but I cannot get it to push up out of the tube, I believe it has gotten stuck from age with the lipstick being in there too long. The powder well looks very clean, the powder puff looks unused but it has a lipstick smudge on the top, which I have not attempted to clean. The original comb is in it's swing arm, the coin slot holds a short stack of nickels, from a time when a nickel could buy a loaf of bread. There is little to no evidence that this carryall was used.
The mirror is in nice clear image, showing very little signs of aging. The other side opens to reveal the cigarette compartment, an area that comes in handy for credit cards, money, a hanky or small accessories. The Evans insignia can be found in multiple places on the interior, one which I am showing. This fabulous creation measures 5½ in length by 3¼ in width, has a depth of 1⅛ inches and the mesh handle is 5¾ in length. If you have been searching for that extraordinary mother of pearl shell compact carry-all, please consider this exceptional example. I rarely find these compact purses with the mother-of-pearl covering so much of the carryall, you will love it.
