Maud Hundley lived in Anchorage, Kentucky, where she opened a needlepoint shop. Maud had an eye for color and design, she took blank canvases and hand stitched them into art. Her purses have become sought after, especially ones like this, that have a special French enameled frame as it's crown. Being as this is a smaller purse, I suspect this is one of her earlier purses, it certainly has the look, size and feel of the 1940's but I advertize this purse as 1960 since she was still doing lots of business during that time. The workmanship is lovely, having a cheerful color palette of deep overall tones. She really did a nice job of pulling together the colors in the frame and the purse, very well matched. This purse has been professionally and thoroughly cleaned, it is in well kept condition with only a tad bit of slight discolor on one corner. This purse will carry with a medium firm hand, as it does seem to maintain a distinct shape. Even so, I recommend keeping vintage evening handbags stuffed with tissue paper, in an effort to preserve it's proper shape and avoid creasing or damage. And yes, the frame is a special treat indeed. This one is particularly intricate. The brassy toned metal is heavily sculpted, cut out and pierced, then enamel painted. The coloring of the paint is in marvelous tones, very pretty and elegant. Upon close inspection, you will likely find one or two places that have a little paint loss but for the most part, the paint is extremely good on this frame. The lift-up to open clasp is just as unique as the rest of the purse and overall, what a splendid hand made creation. My photos are very good and show the true nature of this elegant purse. Please keep in mind that the background color is a definite ivory. The piping that is used to pull the purse panels together is a slightly deeper tone of ivory than the purse itself. I do believe my photos show the ivory colors well, at least on my screen. There is a large 1 1/4 inch wide perimeter gusset on this purse and since it is a smaller purse, a more generous gusset will give a bit more room inside. But this is a purse for the gal that prefers to carry less and keep life simpler. The side edges, near the frame, are finished with a matched ivory tone ribbed faille fabric, all in well preserved vintage condition. Stuffed with tissue paper, as shown, this purse measures 4 3/4 inches in total height, 6 inches at it's widest, 5 1/2 across the frame and the carry chain handle has a 5 inch drop. The interior lining is stunning and looks unused, with dual pockets and a designer label. If you are attracted to this 1960 Maud Hundley needlepoint purse, you will find this purse even more charming in your hands, it's in excellent condition and will be an asset to any wardrobe.
