No one will be able to say that this is just another tray because this completely hand decorated piece is truly a beauty. You'll find lots of hand work, slipware design and bead work on the Parian style unglazed bisque background, with hand worked highlights, and an outstanding center portrait scene. I have looked it over well with a magnifier and every aspect appears to be hand decorated, including the central portrait. If the scene is a transfer, I cannot detect that, it appears as hand painted. I have had this tray for awhile, it was posted on page 3 with some fairly bad photos so I decided to update the pictures so you can see how fabulous this tray is and determine it's worthiness. As you can see the figural scene is quite charming and is presented in a romantic theme, bordered with a raised edge of gold gilded beading, as well as some cobalt blue slip work. This type of slipware was prevalent on the Nippon pieces but this tray has lost most or all of the mark it had on the backside, so I cannot confirm the country of origin. The backside of the tray shows that it has plenty of years of age and could possible use a little cleaning. The tray is a significant work of art that I am sure took time and talent to bring to completion. The color palette is very pleasing and my photos depict the tones of this tray very well. The remainder of my photos show all the wonderful slipware designs and how truly lovely they are. The tray has a variety of pastel colors that include multiples shades of pinks, blues, greens, quite a bit of gold gilt raised beading and the form of the tray is graceful with it's raised and scalloped outer perimeter edge. I believe my photos show you how delightful this tray really is. The photo of the corner of the tray, it appears to have a hairline at the very tip of the corner, but not so, close examination shows it to be a line of gold gilt. I find no structural flaws with this tray, no cracks, hairlines or other damages. There are the occasional handling marks or slight discolors but these are not bad, very acceptable and beautiful condition. This antique porcelain bisque tray measures very generously at 18 in width by almost 9 in height. I think you'll enjoy it for decades to come.
