I bought this rather primitive dough bowl from a Michigan estate farm sale, it was a little dusty and dry, so my husband gently cleaned it up, being careful to remove only the dirt and none of the wood. He did a terrific job bringing this bowl to it's current rich and radiant tones, adding only a hand rubbing of coconut oil. As you can see by my photos, this antique dough bowl has been well used and loved for well over a century. It was hand turned on a lathe, I can detect the lines on the exterior of the bowl. The interior is showing lots of cut marks from the decades of chopping herbs and other food preparations, as well as both dark and light staining. It appears that maple was used for this bowl as it carries good sturdy weight, however, not overly heavy. The maker of this treasure was thoughtful to create an extra wide 1¼ inch lip to the outer top edge, giving this bowl added dimension. And speaking of the edge of the bowl, I am excited to finally show a bowl with some of the remaining outer skin or bark. Occasionally a bowl will have a smooth flat edge somewhere on the bowl or the top edge. The bowl maker wanted maximum size so it didn't matter to them early farm gals if a little tree bark was left on the bowl but over the decades the bark or outer skin of the tree would smooth down or dry and fall off, leaving behind a mysterious flat area. This bowl has three of these flattened areas at the rim, one is very small and one still has it's skin attached, how delightful. My photos are excellent and express this unique characteristic very well and the true nature of this wonderful 1800's bowl. The size is generous and large, 16¾ by 16½ and sits steady between 4¼ to 4¾ inches. It is out of round, caused by the normal drying of the wood, it's just the way you would want it to be, slightly out of shaped, adding more distinct character to it's personality. This bowl is in very good antique condition, well used and worn but no cracks, holes or damages. This antique dough bowl is a useful primitive country artifact and as you can see in the last photo, will accept plenty of fresh veggies, it looks great on my kitchen Hoosier. It is the perfect bowl for decorating, let your imagination have fun, don't let this one get away, let me know and I'll put it aside for you.
