From a New Jersey auction comes this exciting and large antique New England trencher styled dough bread bowl, a mid to late 1800's hand carved creation.

This masterfully chiseled bowl appears to be made from a medium weight wood and is completely smoothed from age and loving use.

I've done nothing to this bowl but give it a gentle cleaning and wiping with a damp cloth. I may have taken the photos a little too quickly, as you might notice a few damp spots still inside the corners of the bowl, that have since dried. Currently this bowl is in it's natural, untouched state but it would look great with a light coconut oiling, as the oil would pop the graining and add more color depth to the wood. However, I know some of you prefer the dryer look but if you like your bowls oiled, it won't take much to do it or I can oil it for you prior to shipping. This is a marvelous example of hand carved workmanship from the perhaps late 1800's. The wood has a wonderful smooth feel along with all the bumps, bruises, nicks, scratches, stains and age related markings that you would expect to see on a well loved bowl of this age.

Although there are some cut marks inside this bowl, I believe it was used more for the making of dough rather than the chopping of herbs. This bowl has a very pleasant personality and comes in soft, light brown tones, however, as I mentioned earlier, an oiling will surely bring out the depth of color more. This antique trencher bowl is delightfully and generously sized at 20 inches from end to end, 12 inches wide and it sits up from the table by about 3 to 4 inches depending on where you measure it. I photographed it atop a 24 inch square antique butcher block so you can see how well sized it is. This New England dough bread bowl has fabulous symmetry and has held up beautifully over the decades, suffering no damages, cracks or loss of integrity. If you've been searching for a larger trencher styled antique dough bowl, please consider adding this one to your treasured country accessories.
