I LOVE THIS MUNISING BOWL, it has good age and was produced by the well respected Munising bowl and woodenware company. This dynamic example carries their first mark, making it's age indisputably from the 1920's era. Antique and vintage oval dough bowls seem to be the hardest types of trencher bowls to find without damages. This bowl suffers no cracks, in fact, I suspect that the previous owner inherited this bowl from Grandma and really didn't use it at all. For a bowl of this age, it's in remarkably well kept condition, showing only light usage. This maple bowl was a bit dirty when I acquired it, so I gave it a proper cleaning with lots of steel wool, as to raise the dirt out of the graining. I used no chemicals to clean this bowl. I am delighted with the results, this bowl is now radiantly clean, just the way I would want to own it. After a deep cleaning, I did give it a slight layering of expeller pressed virgin coconut oil, which is the only oil I put on my bowls. This bowl feels wonderful to the touch, smooth as silk, it is not oily or tacky, not at all, it really couldn't feel any better. It is possible that this bowl was waxed at some point during it's life. It has an ever so slight shine but shows no evidence of varnish or other similar application. This bowl is made out of hard maple and shows a few scatterings of birdseyes. The size is impressive and it is the largest Munising oval I have ever offered, measuring at over 24 inches from side to side, 13 inches from front to back and sits steady at 5 inches above the table in height. The wood graining is tight and wavy. There are just enough cut marks to give this bowl age used character but no signs that it was used extensively. Of course there are bumps, nicks, and age related signs of use but overall, I think this bowl has been sitting around somewhere for a very, very long time, just getting dirty. I'm showing you lots of great photos that express the true nature of this bowl, in it's cleaned condition, but it is when you see it in person that you will be most impressed.
This bowl has a nice firm foot that supports the weight of the bowl well. This bowl sits steady and this master bowl maker was thoughtful to add notched out handles for ease of carrying. Needless, to say, you will need 2 hands to carry this bowl comfortably, as it is quite grandiose in size. Overall, this bowl shows some nice signs of age but nothing that effects it's durability or integrity. This bowl is in splendid, outstanding condition and the truth is, they really don't get much better than this when it comes to size and condition.
I can't find one negative to complain about. This bowl has a small hole on the outer top edge, this hole was used for hanging, as the 1920's kitchen did not always have room for such a spacious piece. A bowl like this, will not come along very often. If in over 25 years of selling bowls, I have not been able to offer an oval Munising as large, it might be some time, if ever, that I acquire another. Again, the coloring is very pleasant and you will be thrilled if you prefer the lighter honey tones. I should also mention how gracefully the wood thins down at the sides of this bowl. This is a magnificent antique solid maple dough bread bowl trencher that will find a special place amongst your kitchen accessories, on your sideboard, dining table or center island. Please examine all my photos carefully and decide that this is a bowl that you must take home.
