Between the color, the splendid wavy graining and those characteristic eyes that are found in maple, this bowl has a wonderful personality and is quite pleasing to look at, it is radiant with life. This oval trencher was hand made during the very early 1900's and was used primarily for food or dough preparation, as there are only a few cut marks, so not a lot of herbs were chopped in this bowl. There is a very small area of darkening in the interior bottom but it in no way detracts in the least. I'm showing you lots of photos so you can imagine how fabulous it will look amongst your country decor or woodenware collection. These oval maple dough bowls are highly esteemed and sought after, it's no wonder why because they are incredibly appealing. This example has a useful and comfortable size of 20⅝ in length by 10¾ in width and sits flat and steady at between 3 and 3½ in height depending on where you measure, not too large but still a nice size. The wood worker was thoughtful to carve out some notched handles at each end of the underside of the bowl, a nice added feature. I find no crack, hole or damage to this bowl. It has a few scratches and cut marks from use but nothing really very conspicuous at all, much nicer than what is usually found in a bowl of this age. The colorful patina is rich and warm, the bowl is just gorgeous and did I mention how gracefully the wood thins down at the sides of the bowl. This is a splendid antique maple dough bread bowl trencher that will find a special place in your heart and on your kitchen Hoosier, sideboard or dining table. This bowl is a beauty, if you like the color, don't let this one get away.
