A few recent auctions have brought forth some wonderful New England dough trenchers, this one is especially pleasing, having good size with a variety of honey brown  tones.

Antique trencher dough bread bowl

This fabulous hand made American example was most likely carved during the late 1800's, it has plenty of warmth, personality and character.

The size is generously roomy and would be considered a medium large bowl at 18⅞ inches from end to end by 11 inches wide and sitting at approx. 4 inches tall. Overall, this bowl will hold a fairly large arrangement and will be fun to decorate as the seasons pass.  Obviously very symmetrical for a bowl of this age and it's in great condition as well. I see no significant damages and no opens cracks. At one end there is an old hole that was used for hanging the bowl when it was not in use. At that hole, it looks like a small piece of wood popped out and was glued back in. It took me a long time to notice this. I still have trouble finding it when I'm looking for it. If I didn't tell you, you might never see it. Although repaired, it's a very good job and has no effect on the usefulness of the bowl.

This bowl is made from a really nice hard wood, looks like maple to me and has all the characteristics of maple. I like the pleasant honey brown tones and this bowl has good solid weight as well. The chisel marks on the backside have smoothed with age but can be easily felt when passing your hand over the wood. The exterior looks like there is some faint color deep in the grooves of the wood, a slight reddish tinge, it's smooth to the touch, I can't feel it but I can see it. It's not all over the exterior, there is just a soft faint color about the backside, especially where there is graining of the wood, it looks nice to me. The bottom of the bowl has a scratch and there are a variety of other imperfections around the bowl, such as: bumps, bruises, nicks, stains, and scratches. I have done nothing to this bowl but to gently clean it. The exterior might have been lightly waxed and the interior may have been oiled in the past. In any case, it looks and feels great, a beautiful bowl to own or give as a gift.
